AUBURN | County legislators moved forward on their plans to increase two part-time Board of Elections commissioners salaries on Tuesday night.

During the first Cayuga County Ways and Means Committee meeting of 2013, legislators approved a resolution to authorize the county to revise the commissioners' salaries as stated in the 2013 budget.

In late December, the Legislature approved changes that would amend both part-time positions by $2,500 over the next two years. Changes were made to bring Cayuga County up to par with other counties, officials said. Prior to the change, both Board of Elections commissioners were earning a salary of $11,978 a year for their part-time positions — the lowest paid salary for the position in the state.

Legislators agreed that amending both salaries would afford them advantages in the future when searching for new candidates.

On Tuesday night, committee members unanimously approved the resolution and the Legislature will vote on the issue at their monthly meeting on Jan. 22.
