Cayuga County's and New York's unemployment increased one-tenth of a point in October, according to data released by the state Department of Labor.

The unemployment rate in Cayuga County was 7.6 percent in October, up from 7.5 percent in September and 7.1 percent in October 2011.

Employment levels increased slightly in Cayuga County, with about 37,900 residents employed in October.  But more people were also listed as unemployed, which means some people who previously were not counted as unemployed have rejoined the workforce by actively seeking a job.

The state unemployment rate was 8.3 percent in October, up from 8.2 percent in September and 8 percent in October 2011.

Statewide, the number of employed residents increased, but the number of unemployed residents also increased. Approximately 797,600 residents were unemployed in October, up from 782,800 in September.
