AUBURN — Last summer, Jason Stein answered an online ad for a mother-daughter prostitution team in the village of Weedsport. But, instead of a woman and her 12-year-old girl, Stein soon found out it was actually a New York state trooper.

Stein was one of 11 people arrested in a prostitution sting in Cayuga County. State police said investigators worked with the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office and the FBI to carry out the operation in Weedsport on June 9, 2016.

Stein, formally of Liverpool, was initially charged with first-degree attempted rape and second-degree attempted patronizing a person for prostitution, both felonies. However, upon further investigation, troopers also discovered he had child pornography on his computer. The 35-year-old was then charged with the additional felony of possessing an obscene performance by a child.

On Thursday, Stein appeared in Cayuga County Court before Judge Thomas Leone. He ultimately pleaded guilty to a reduced count of second-degree attempted rape and possessing child pornography.

During his plea, Stein admitted that he intended to have sex with a woman and her 12-year-old daughter. He also said he possessed a video of an adult female having sex with an 8-year-old girl.

Stein could face up to four years in prison for each felony. However, Leone agreed to sentence him to a total of two years in prison followed by 10 years post-release supervision.

Stein was released from Cayuga County Jail on $5,000 cash bail, $10,000 bond. He said he currently resides with his parents in Erie County. He will remain there until his sentencing on Feb. 1.
