Three new fish rearing tanks will help the Carpenter's Brook Fish Hatchery in Elbridge to raise brown trout to be released in area streams, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced Tuesday.

The new tanks, valued at $10,000 were funded by an Environmental Benefit Project and provided through a cooperative agreement between the DEC and the Friends of Carpenter's Brook Fish Hatchery.

The more spacious tanks will allow the fish raised in them to reach larger sizes before being released into Geddes Brook and other Onondaga County waters.

According to the DEC, larger fish are less likely to be killed by predators and less likely to die because of disease or sudden temperature changes.
