Know any tail-wagging pups who would enjoy playing with other dogs? Then raise a paw, and help Auburn win a free dog park.
The CNY Dog Owners Group — working with the Cayuga County Legislature's blessing — is currently competing in PetSmart's annual "Bark for Your Park" contest, vying to win Auburn up to $100,000 to construct a dog park.
With only three weeks left in the contest, Auburn is one of the 15 final cities jockeying to win either the top prize or one of four $25,000 awards.
The CNY Dog Owners Group first participated in the Bark for Your Park contest in 2012, finishing in ninth place in a competition comprised of 800 entries. As of Friday evening, Auburn had 42,245 votes and was ranked fifth out of the 1,107 communities who entered the 2013 edition of the contest.
The group was given permission by the Legislature in 2012 to build the park in an underused section of Emerson Park. But legislators gave one condition: no taxpayer dollars would be allocated to construct the dog park.
Residents can vote twice a day for Auburn's dog park — once on Facebook and once on PetSmart's website. Internet browsers can also help Auburn win points by viewing the city's promotional video on YouTube.
PetSmart will announce the contest's winners on Wednesday, July 31.
