CHITTENANGO — Dorothy Mae Gilbert, 86, of Chittenango, passed away Feb. 7, 2018 at St. Camillus after a long illness. Born in Syracuse, she was the daughter of Edward and Mable French. She graduated as salutatorian from Chittenango High School and graduated cum laude from Syracuse University. Dorothy was a multi-talented person. She was a medical social worker, seamstress, cook and ECHO-meals on wheels cook. She was involved in the creation of Meals on Wheels at Fairmont Community Church. She enjoyed travel in the west, Alaska and Canada; as well as many winters in Florida. She worked as a social worker at Crouse Hospital in the NICU and Emergency Psychiatric Service retiring after 20 years.
Dorothy is survived by her husband of 62 years, William J. Gilbert; her son, Mark (Lisa) Gilbert, of Chittenango; her daughters, Erin Gilbert, of Chittenango, and Beth Gilbert, of Port Byron; a sister, Marilyn Lynch, of Chittenango; five grandchildren, Jason and Jacob Gilbert, David (Angelica), Randy, and AshLee Conway; great-granddaughter, Hannah Conway; and several nieces.
The family would like to thank the staff at St. Camillus for taking excellent care of Dorothy.
There are no calling hours and a celebration of Dorothy’s life will be held at a later date.
