PORT BYRON — William (Bill) M. Hamel, 83, of McClellan Street, Port Byron, passed away at home with his wife by his side.
The son of the late John R. Hamel Sr. and Margaret Mackenzie Hamel, he was born in Chicago on April 27, 1934.
He proudly served his country as a first lieutenant with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Bill worked as a land surveyor with Ianuzzi and Romans Land Surveying of Syracuse. He also served as the supervisor for the town of Mentz for six years. He was a member of the Port Byron Volunteer Fire Department for 48 years. He enjoyed electronics, repairing clocks, traveling, camping and reading.
Bill is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carol Hamel; his daughter, Teresa Hamel, of Rome; his two sons, Christopher (Darcy) Hamel, of Arizona and James (Sharon) Hamel, of Indiana; 12 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; two brothers, John (Sandra) Hamel Jr., of Michigan and Robert (Lynn) Hamel, of California; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Robert Hamel of Rochester in 2001.
Per Bill's wishes, there will be no services. Friends are invited to call on the family from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at White Chapel Funeral Home, 2719 Erie Drive, Weedsport.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. William Hamel may be made to the Port Byron Volunteer Fire Department or Port Byron Ambulance Services.
