HIT: To the Auburn Junior High School, for becoming a finalist in a competition to earn grant money for new fitness equipment.

The Auburn school is hoping to generate enough online votes at danimalsshopriteschoolcontest.young-america.com to secure $25,000 for the installation of indoor and outdoor equipment at the Franklin Street school.

Dozens of schools from around the Northeast are finalists, so the Auburn students need all of the support they can get. Check out the website and cast a vote for their entry.

HIT: To the return of "normal" winter weather in the Cayuga County area.

After a stretch of extremely harsh conditions, featuring dangerously low wind chills and a heavy dose of snowfall, the temperature finally climbed into double-digit territory on Sunday and weather should remain seasonably stable for the balance of the week.

We're all used to tough winters in this region, but the start of 2018 was a brutal test for even the most-weathered central New Yorkers.

MISS: To the slow start in conference play for the Syracuse University men's basketball team.

The Orange dropped games at Wake Forest and at home to Notre Dame last week to bring their Atlantic Coast Conference record to 1-2. It's obviously still quite early, but the competition is only going to get tougher. A difficult test awaits the squad tonight at Virginia.

The non-conference portion of the schedule had Orange fans feeling rather good about this year's team; hopefully they can get back on track soon.
