I agree with Mr. Farrell on one thing: We need more business-oriented people and less politicians on our Legislature. But is that what we have with those he’s praising? Look back recent years and none of those people voted no on the budgets he’s blaming on the Republicans. Most he’s praising retired from jobs funded by taxpayers and continue to receive pensions, benefits funded by taxpayers.
As a self-employed business owner the past 30 years in this county, I like others will be working until retirement age or beyond before I can retire and then no one will give me a pension with benefits! This county is full of small business owners and self-employed people. Some elected officials are out of touch with that. Every year school taxes, town taxes, county taxes go up but do you get a 1.5- to 3-percent pay increase? Taxpayers are asked to live on less in there personal budgets because these entities can’t!
In the 1990s this county had a 84,000 population. Today its dipped below 78,000. People and businesses are leaving! Our county government has hit 800 employees full- and part-time and seasonal, a number not seen since the nursing home and CHS nurses, which we no longer have. With a shrinking population why should government grow? I’ve had this discussion with chairman Batman how government should run more like business and his reply is it doesn’t and can’t. I say if it did government might be more efficient.
Mr. Farrell supports Elaine Daley because she worked for the county, but how’s that business oriented? Her opponent Mike Lesch works for a small business in this county, so isn’t that what we want? The 2018 budget draws $545,000 from fund balance that Batman says will be restored in savings found next year. Why not find them now? Mr. Farrell says the Democrats will keep your taxes low but in 2016 they wanted to create the vehicle tax when sales tax revenues were down. Luckily it failed! Blow up party politics and vote for those that’ll spend your tax dollars wisely.
