A couple of familiar faces will return to Falcon Park next summer as the Washington Nationals announced 2014 minor-league coaching assignments on Friday.
Manager Gary Cathcart will return for his fourth season as Auburn's skipper. Cathcart has been the Doubledays manager every season since Washington became Auburn's parent club in 2011. He owns a 117-109 record and managed the Doubledays to the New York-Penn League championship series 2011.
The other name that Auburn fans remember is new pitching coach Tim Redding. Redding pitched for the 1998 league co-champion Doubledays when the team was part of Houston's farm system. Redding is a native of Rochester.
Redding made his Major League debut with the Astros in 2003 and played six seasons in the big leagues, also pitching for the Padres, Nationals, Yankees and Mets. He pitched for former Auburn manager Manny Acta in 2007-08 with the Nationals. Redding finished with a career record of 37-57.
The Nationals also announced Auburn's new hitting coach is Amaury Garcia, who coached the Nationals' Gulf Coast League team last season.
