The Spartans' defense held the Royals to 10 field goals, as the Cayuga Community College women's basketball team topped Schenectady 53-37 on Saturday.

Gabby Bell paced the Spartans' offense with 11 points and added four steals.

Union Springs graduate Michaela Tanner added 10 points, four rebounds and three steals. Dontasia Britt chipped in nine points, and Jasmine Walker finished with seven points.

Nine different Cayuga players showed up on the scoresheet.

Cayuga (3-1) hosts Columbia-Greene Community College on Saturday.


Weedsport graduate Mike Chirco received the Commonwealth Coast Football's Defensive Player of the Week honors for the third time this season.

Chirco, a junior linebacker at Western New England University, had a team-high nine tackles as the Golden Bears clinched their first conference title with a 42-28 win over Curry College on Nov. 4.

Western New England plays Delaware Valley University in the first round of the Division III tournament Saturday in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.
