Two months after Assemblyman Gary Finch announced his support for state Sen. John DeFrancisco in the race for governor, he is now endorsing the likely Republican gubernatorial nominee.

Finch, R-Springport, backed Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro for governor. He made the announcement in a news release Monday.

The two men are former state Assembly colleagues. Before being elected county executive, Molinaro served in the Assembly from 2007 to 2012.

"Marc has a brilliant mind and is a gifted communicator," Finch said. "He is a man of high integrity ... His energetic style, inclusive message and wealth of experience will bring a tremendous change to the governor's mansion."

Molinaro is one of three Republican candidates in the race for governor. DeFrancisco, R-DeWitt, and attorney Joe Holland are also seeking the GOP nomination.

DeFrancisco recently suspended his campaign. Molinaro is the front-runner for the nomination and has been endorsed by 49 Republican county chairs representing more than 83 percent of the weighted vote at the convention.

The GOP convention will be held May 23-24 in Manhattan.

Finch initially endorsed DeFrancisco, a fellow member of the Cayuga County state legislative delegation. But after DeFrancisco announced he would no longer actively campaign for governor, Finch has shifted his support to Molinaro.

"Marc will be traveling the state with a plan to strengthen the middle class: investing in our subways and infrastructure, unlocking opportunities through world-class public education, bringing jobs back to upstate New York and cutting property taxes for small businesses, families and seniors," Finch said. "That is why I am supporting Marc Molinaro this fall for governor of New York state."
