Voting at the Union Springs fire Department on Election Day in Cayuga County.

New York counties learned Wednesday how much state funding will be available to implement early voting.

The 2019-20 state budget included $24 million to reimburse counties for operating expenses and equipment purchases needed to administer early voting.

Each county will receive $15,000 per early voting poll site for operating expenses and another $15,000 per location for equipment purchases, such as electronic poll books — a digitized version of the voter registration rolls — and on-demand ballot printers.

Counties will receive additional aid based on voter enrollment, according to the state Board of Elections.

The state Legislature approved the early voting measure in January. Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed it a week later. The law establishes a nine-day early voting period in New York. Early voting will begin 10 days before the election — on a Saturday — and conclude the Sunday before Election Day.

Early voting will begin this year with the general election. The nine-day period commences Saturday, Oct. 26 and ends Sunday, Nov. 3. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 5.

The early voting hours will vary by county, but the law requires counties to have late polling hours at least two weekdays during the nine-day period. Locations must be open at least eight hours during the week and five hours on weekends.

Counties are required to have a minimum of one polling location for every 50,000 registered voters. Some counties opted to have more. Cayuga County, which has 49,324 registered voters, must have one polling place for early voting. But county election commissioners opted to have three sites due to the geography of the county and the availability of state funding.

Here is how much each county will receive from the state to fund early voting:

New York City: $8,503,572 for 57 poll sites; $3,435,741 for operating expenses and $5,067,831 for equipment purchases (Total grants for Bronx, Kings, New York, Queens and Richmond counties)
