The annual Taste NY Food Truck Competition at the New York State Fair will have a new location and schedule this year.
The contest, which has been held at Chevy Court since its inception, will move to the New York Experience festival area on the west end of the fairgrounds. The two-day event is scheduled for the final two days of the fair, Sunday, Sept. 1 and Monday, Sept. 2.
The competition will run from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day.
Fair Director Troy Waffner explained the decision to move the competition by recognizing its growth. More food trucks are entering the contest and more fairgoers are buying the entrees.
"Moving the festivities to the western part of the fairgrounds, with plenty of grassy areas and seating, will make the competition a more comfortable experience for everyone and will be one more reason to enjoy one of the great spots on the fairgrounds," Waffner said.
More than 30 food trucks entered the 2018 competition, with most of the entrants hailing from upstate New York. The past winners include Auburn-based Tonzi's Catering Company, which swept the Judges' Choice and People's Choice awards in 2017.
The application period for the 2019 food truck contest is now open. Food truck operators have until July 1 to apply. More information about the competition and the application form can be found at nysfair.ny.gov/competitions/food-truck-competition/.
Food trucks offer samples of one entree for $3. Fairgoers help select the People's Choice Award winners by texting their votes to a phone number the fair reveals on the day of the competition.
Aldi, one of the food truck competition's sponsors, will award $1,000, $500 and $250 gift cards to the top three vote-getters on each day of the contest.
The fair runs from Aug. 21 through Sept. 2.
