The state Gaming Commission on Monday approved requests from two New York casinos to lower the number of slot machines and table games required at the facilities.

Resorts World Catskills and Tioga Downs Casino filed petitions to amend the gaming facility licenses, which require the casinos to have a minimum number of slot machines and tables.

Resorts World Catskills, a Sullivan County casino, was required to have no less than 2,150 slot machines and 102 table games. The casino's latest weekly financial report indicates there are 2,016 slot machines and 152 table games at the facility.

The gaming facility license for Tioga Downs Casino in Nichols, Tioga County, mandates the casino to have no less than 942 slot machines and 44 tables. As of last week, the casino had the minimum number of slot machines and table games.

Both casinos sought the changes to "remove underperforming slot and table game assets," according to the commission. The four commercial casinos licensed by the state — del Lago Resort & Casino in Seneca County and Rivers Casino in Schenectady are the others — have fallen short of revenue projections.

Before agreeing to the reductions, state gaming officials determined the new minimums wouldn't affect gaming tax revenue or casino employment. They considered other factors, including facility stability, the impact on patrons and "the elimination of inefficiencies."

With the commission's approval, Resorts World Catskills will be required to have at least 1,600 slot machines, 102 table games and 16 poker tables. Tioga Downs must have no less than 892 slot machines and 34 table games.

Tioga Downs opened in December 2016 and had more than $70.3 million in gross gaming revenue in the 2017-18 fiscal year. The 2018-19 fiscal year ends this month, but the casino is already ahead of last year's pace with over $71.5 million in gross revenue through February.

Resorts World Catskills was the last of the four casinos to open in upstate New York. In the current fiscal year, the casino has more than $146.4 million in gross gaming revenue.
