Kevin Owens Roman Reigns

WWE Universal Champion Kevin Owens attacks Roman Reigns on a recent episode of WWE Monday Night Raw. Owens and Reigns will square off for the Universal title at Royal Rumble. 

WWE is kicking off 2017 with what could possibly be one of its best pay-per-views of the year. 

The card is headlined by the 30-man Royal Rumble match, which decides who will face one of the main WWE title holders at WrestleMania 33. Participants include The Undertaker, Randy Orton, Goldberg and Brock Lesnar. 

There are title matches on the card, too. Kevin Owens will defend the WWE Universal Championship against Roman Reigns, while AJ Styles will put the WWE Championship on the line against John Cena. 

In other action, Charlotte defends the WWE Raw Women's Championship against Bayley. And Rich Swann defends the WWE Cruiserweight Championship against Neville. 

The Citizen will have live coverage of WWE Royal Rumble beginning at 7 p.m. Sunday. Follow along for live analysis and match results throughout the night. 


Kickoff match: Becky Lynch, Nikki Bella and Naomi vs. Alexa Bliss, Mickie James and Natalya

What happened: This was a good match. Six-person tag team matches are hit or miss. But this was a solid contest. 

Early on, we get a cool spot that ended with a triple suplex by the team of Becky Lynch, Nikki Bella and Naomi. They clear the ring and briefly celebrate their successful team effort. 

Lynch and Natalya square off. Lynch hits a couple of clotheslines and a dropkick. She followed that up with a flying forearm and a side kick. She leaps off the apron to take out Natalya. 

Mickie James attacks Lynch from behind and whips her into the ringside barrier. That allows Natalya to gain the upper hand. She tosses Lynch back in the ring. 

Bliss is tagged in and kicks Lynch repeatedly in the corner. Bliss jaws at the referee, which allows James to attack Lynch. Bliss tries to cover Lynch, but only gets a 2 count. 

Bliss tags in Natalya and tag team Lynch. Natalya looks for a suplex, but Lynch rolls her up for a 2 count. Natalya hits a lariat for a 2 count of her own. 

The momentum shifted when Naomi is tagged. She gets a series of kicks and goes for a pin, but James breaks it up. Natalya is in the ring and Bella hits a big spear. Bliss and Naomi are the legal wrestlers. Naomi hits a split-legged moonsault on Bliss in the corner for the win. 

WINNERS: Naomi, Becky Lynch and Nikki Bella

WWE Raw Tag Team Championship match: Cesaro and Sheamus vs. Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows

What happened: There are two referees watching the action for this one. Cesaro gets an early 2 count. Sheamus is tagged in and starts tangling with Karl Anderson. 

Cesaro hits a springboard uppercut and gets another near-fall. Sheamus enters and they hit a double-team suplex on Gallows. Sheamus with a knee to Gallows. He covers, but only gets a 2 count. 

Sheamus fires off some forearms on Gallows. Sheamus with a clothesline off the top rope. He covers again, but Gallows kick out. Cesaro off the top rope and he gets a 2 count. 

Cesaro attempts the Cesaro Swing, but Gallows slips out. Anderson is tagged in and takes out Sheamus, who was on the apron. Cesaro hits an uppercut. Anderson clobbers him and goes for the pin, but Cesaro kicks out. 

The match ends when one of the referees was hit by a Brogue Kick delivered by Sheamus. Cesaro swings Anderson and tries for the Sharpshooter. Gallows breaks up the hold with a boot to Cesaro. Anderson covers, but Sheamus breaks it up. 

Gallows kicks Sheamus to set up the Magic Killer. It connects! Gallows and Anderson get the pin to win the titles.

Kickoff match: Sasha Banks vs. Nia Jax

What happened: This was a fairly quick match. There's a quick commercial break. When the action resumes, Sasha is hitting Nia with some chops. Nia pushes her down. Sasha comes back with a Bank Statement attempt. She has it locked in for a few seconds. Nia fights out of it. 

Nia whips Sasha into the corner. Sasha answers with a kick, but Nia chops her down with a blow to her "injured" knee. 

Sasha is in the corner. Nia charges and Sasha ducks out of the way. Nia hits the ring post shoulder first. Sasha with a series of kicks to Nia. Sasha hits the double knees on Nia. She goes for the pin, but Nia shoves her off. 

The match ends with Sasha trying to get in some offense, but Nia hits a pop-up Samoan drop to stop the momentum. Nia covers and picks up the victory.

WINNER: Nia Jax 

WWE Raw Women's Championship match: Charlotte (champion) vs. Bayley

What happened: The action quickly moves to the outside and Bayley tries to work over Charlotte's leg. Charlotte drops Bayley face first into the ring apron, then shoves her into the ring steps. 

Back in the ring, Charlotte works over Bayley. She applies a head lock, then goes for a pin. Quick kick out by Bayley. Charlotte hits a Flair chop, then another. She attempts a suplex, but Bayley counters and rolls her up. Charlotte quickly escapes. Charlotte answers with a big boot. She gets a near fall of her own. 

Bayley and Charlotte both charge at each other and hit a double clothesline. They're both down. Once they get up, Bayley hits some chops of her own. Charlotte responds. Bayley fights back and caps off her offense with a springboard crossbody. She heads to the top rope, but needs to get Charlotte in position. She works her over, then returns to the top rope. Bayley attempts an elbow drop — and connects! She gets a near-fall.

Charlotte gets the momentum back and locks in the Figure 4. Bayley is able to reverse the hold, but Charlotte reverses it back into the Figure 8. Charlotte uses the ropes for the bridge. The referee realizes Charlotte is grabbing the ropes and breaks the hold. 

Bayley is down and Charlotte heads to the top rope. She attempts a moonsault, but Bayley gets her knee up. Bayley covers, but Charlotte kicks out. 

Bayley and Charlotte are in the corner. Bayley tries to attack Charlotte. Charlotte kicks Bayley away. Bayley comes back for more, but Charlotte shoves her away and over the top rope. 

Bayley gets on the ring apron. Charlotte sees a window of opportunity. She hits Natural Selection to keep her pay-per-view winning stream in tact. 


WWE Universal Championship match: Kevin Owens (champion) vs. Roman Reigns in a no disqualification match

What happened: Before the match begins, Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens attack Roman Reigns. Jericho is supposed to get in the shark cage, but he's avoiding it. Reigns fights back and grabs Jericho. He throws Jericho into the cage and the referee locks him up. The cage is going up. The referee rings the bell. We're underway. 

Owens and Reigns head to the outside. Reigns with some rights as they head into the crowd. Owens hits Reigns with a pole of sorts. Reigns slams Owens into the same pole. They head to ringside. Owens attacks Reigns, then grabs a chair. He hits Reigns with the chair. Owens starts stacking chairs into a pyramid. Reigns is back up and hits Owens with a right. Owens fights back and has Reigns propped against the ringside barrier. Owens hits a cannonball. 

With the chairs at ringside, Owens looks to put Reigns through the stack. Reigns charges at him and hits a clothesline. Owens gets sent into a ring post. Reigns still on offense and hits a sit-out powerbomb after hitting a big boot. He caught Owens with a big boot on a cannonball attempt. Reigns sizes up Owens for a Superman punch, but Owens slides out. Reigns hits the drive by. Reigns sets up a table. Owens connects with a superkick. Reigns is laid out on the table. Owens climbs the top rope. He hits a frog splash to put Reigns through the table! 

Reigns is in trouble. Owens tries to cover him, but Reigns kicks out. 

A minute or so later, Reigns is back on offense. He clobbers Owens several times and charges at him. Owens stuffs him with a forearm, then hits a superkick. He whipped Reigns into a chair resting in the corner. He covers Reigns, but again Reigns kicks out at two. 

Jericho is trying to get Owens' attention. He has brass knuckles! Jericho tosses the brass knuckles to Owens. Owens puts them on and mocks Reigns' Superman punch preparation. He charges, but Owens stuffs him. Reigns tries to pry the brass knuckles off Owens' hand. Owens escapes and hits the Superman punch. Another pin attempt. Reigns kicks out. 

Owens opens a chair and is eyeing a powerbomb. Reigns counters with a Samoan drop. Owens lands back first on the edge of the chair. Reigns tries for the pin. Owens kicks out at two. 

Reigns has a table and props it up in the corner. Owens rolls up Reigns, but Reigns kicks out. Reigns hits a Superman punch for a near fall. Reigns looks for a spear. Owens punts him and hits a Stone Cold Stunner! Big pop from the San Antonio crowd for that one. Reigns kicks out on the pin attempt. 

Owens stomps Reigns in the corner and hits another cannonball. They're still in the corner and Owens wants to superplex Reigns onto the pyramid of chairs he built earlier in the match. His efforts fail and Reigns hits a Superman punch. Owens falls back and through the chairs! He's out cold. 

Reigns looks over at the announce table. The announcers scatter, clearing the way for Reigns. He scoops up Owens and powerbombs him through the main announce table. Reigns and Owens back in the ring. Owens is crawling over by the table propped in the corner. Reigns is looking for a spear. 

Out of nowhere, Braun Strowman attacks Reigns! Strowman scoops Reigns and power slams him through the table! Reigns is down. Strowman bails. Owens crawls over and covers Reigns for the victory. 


WWE Cruiserweight Championship match: Rich Swann (champion) vs. Neville

What happened: A good match between these two competitors. Swann had some good moments in this match, including a nasty kick to Neville's head that looked like it actually connected. Neville dominated most of the action, though. 

Neville picked up the win with a superplex that set up his crossface-armbar combination. A nice win for him. 


WWE Championship match: AJ Styles (champion) vs. John Cena

What happened: Cena and Styles circle as things get off to a slow start. Styles kicks Cena. Cena hits a clothesline. Styles whipped into the corner. Cena charges and Styles stuffs him. Styles hits a knee drop and a kick to Cena's back. 

Styles taunts Cena and attempts another knee drop. Cena rolls out of the way, then tosses Styles. Cena looks for an AA, but Styles lands on his feet. He kicks Cena in the back and hits an enziguri. Cena comes back and hits shoulder tackles, then attempts the Five-Knuckle Shuffle. Styles with a hurricanrana to end Cena's momentum. 

Cena responds with a vicious clothesline to set up the Five-Knuckle Shuffle. He connects. He looks for the AA, but Styles grabs the rope. Styles back in control and looks for the Phenomenal Forearm. Cena hits an AA. Styles kicks out at two. Cena connects with another vicious clothesline. He covers, but Styles kicks out again. Cena charges at Styles and whiffs. He runs back and Styles hit the Pele kick. Styles hits a Phenomenal Forearm and gets a two count on the cover. 

Cena selling kicks from Styles. Styles tries another and whiffs. Cena with a facebuster out of an electric chair. Cena and Styles exchange blows. Styles with a kick. Cena whiffs and Styles tries a Styles Clash. Cena escapes, but Styles locks in the Calf Crusher. Cena slithers out and applies the STF! Styles inches closer to the rope and Cena drags him back to the center re-applies the STF. There's more struggling and Cena gets Styles in position for the Figure 4. 

Styles answers back with a cross arm breaker. Cena dumps Styles. Styles hits the Styles Clash off a failed leg drop attempt by Cena! That gets a big response from the crowd. Styles gets a near fall. 

Cena comes back with a Code Red. He gets Styles in position for the super AA, and connects! The ref counts, but Styles kicks out at the last moment. 

The closing sequence saw Styles gain the upper hand and attempt a Phenomenal Forearm. He jumped up to the top rope and Cena catches him. Cena hits an AA, rolls through and hits another AA! Cena covers to win the WWE title for the 16th time. 


Royal Rumble match: The 30 participants include The Undertaker, Goldberg, Brock Lesnar and Randy Orton.

Reigns, Orton and Wyatt were the final three standing. Reigns eliminated Wyatt. Reigns had Orton in position for the spear, but Orton caught him with an RKO. Orton clotheslines Reigns over the top rope to win the Royal Rumble.
