WWE: Why Brie and Nikki Bella's Divas tag team championship idea is a good one

Brie and Nikki Bella walk down to the ring before a match between Brie and AJ Lee for the WWE Divas Championship.

WWE seems to be in consolidation mode with its titles. The company unified the WWE Championship and the World Heavyweight Championship in December and there is talk there might be an Intercontinental-U.S. Championship unification match in the near future.

While WWE should drop a couple of belts, it might be worth listening to the Bella Twins' suggestion that the company add tag team championships for the Divas division.

Brie and Nikki Bella mentioned the idea in an interview that will appear in the February issue of WWE Magazine. And if WWE is smart, they will seriously consider the idea.

If Kaitlyn's recent departure teaches WWE officials anything it's the Divas are being underutilized. The Divas division is usually a target of criticism, but the division is on the rise. The Bella Twins are key players. AJ Lee, the longest reigning Divas Champion in history, is one of WWE's top acts. And with Emma and Paige moving up to the main roster this year, the competition in the division will only get better.

And yet, Divas get very little time on WWE programming. On Monday, the Divas match — AJ Lee and Tamina Snuka vs. The Funkadactyls — lasted less than three minutes. That doesn't count the extracurricular activity after the match.

WWE needs to do more with its Divas division. That's why the Bellas' idea to introduce Divas tag team championships is a good one.

According to WWE.com, there are 13 Divas (not counting Lillian Garcia, Renee Young and Vickie Guerrero) in the company. Not all of them will compete for the Divas Championship, but there could be good competition for the Divas tag belts. And it would give WWE another reason to book more Divas matches, which would be a good way to showcase the division's rising stars.

Plus, if WWE wants us to take "Total Divas" seriously, they should provide the Divas with more exposure on WWE programming. Showing Divas matches on Main Event, NXT and Superstars is one thing. But finding time on your two biggest shows, Raw and Smackdown, to book Divas matches should be a bigger priority.

Here are a few potential tag team champions in the Divas division:

- The Bella Twins. This is an obvious choice. The advantage they have is that only one could win the Divas title, but both could team up to win the Divas tag belts. They like to do everything together, so why not make them one of your leading tag teams in the Divas division?

- Emma and Paige. Both have shined on NXT and it would be a great way to give them a nice push after joining the main roster. While both will likely be solid singles wrestlers and legitimate contenders for the Divas Championship, teaming them up early in their run will only help.

- The Funkadactyls. Naomi has shown promise as a singles wrestler, but with Cameron they could be one of the top Divas tag teams. Since splitting from Brodus Clay, the Funkadactyls could use a new direction. This might be a good one for them.

- AJ Lee and Tamina Snuka. The Divas Champion paired with arguably the most intimidating Diva in the company? This could be a formidable tag team. They already have an alliance, so WWE wouldn't have to stretch to make this happen.
