Woody is available for adoption from the Finger Lakes SPCA of CNY.

Every Friday, The Citizen features a pet available for adoption from the Finger Lakes SPCA of Central New York.

This week, we spotlight Woody.

Q: Who is your best friend?

A: That would be my girlfriend, Kit! She lives in a room down the hall from me. She is a very nice girl who traveled here from the South with me and, like me, she has made our shelter her temporary home. She shares my desire to live in a cat-free environment. We don't make any bones about that. She is so hoping to go home soon. Please give her a look when you stop by to see me. You will love her immediately!

Q: Do you have a bucket list and if so, what's number one?

A: In my wildest dreams, I think I would like to be an 8-pound Chihuahua! LOL! If I can't have that, I would really love a nice family who will make me part of theirs. I will promise to be a good boy, not make trouble and need only a few hugs a day to keep me happy. I am easy to please. And I aim to please. What more do you need?

Q: If you could meet someone famous who would that be?

A: I think all of our good Citizen readers are famous, and I would love to meet some of you! Stop by to see me and say hello!

Q: If you could visit any place in the world, where would that be?

A: Having come from south of the border, the heat and humidity don't bother me as much as they do others. However, I wouldn't mind a break, and a quick trip to Helsinki, Finland, might be refreshing. One of my shelter people has been there and I understand it is quite a refreshing and beautiful place. The kind people there also are very find of dogs. I like that!

Q: Do you have an interesting fact to share?

A: I have a couple of interesting facts to share with you. As a victim — and yes, I consider myself a victim — of canine heartworm disease, you should know the facts! Just for the record, heartworm disease is present in all 50 states! If your dog is not on monthly preventives, your dog is at risk! And, finally, I'm sure our wonderful veterinarians would rather prevent heartworm disease than treat it. Pay attention, good Citizen friends — these are facts!

Q: How would you describe yourself?

A: I am the nicest dog ever! I am a lover and a cuddler, and even though I am a big boy, I would love to have a chance at some lap time. I am very obedient for the most part, and very smart. I am a quick study and learn very quickly. I think I would really love it if my new family took me to obedience training. That would be the bomb! I would shine!

Q: Do you have any advice for our good Citizen readers?

A: Not to bore you, good Citizen readers, but here's my only advice for you! All it takes is one bite from a mosquito carrying heartworm, and wham — your dog is sick with this potentially deadly disease. It's never too late to have your faithful friends tested for this scourge, and then put on monthly preventives. Do it now — your pup will thank you and so will we! Love, Woody and friends.
