Rosie is available for adoption from the Finger Lakes SPCA of CNY.

Every Friday, The Citizen features a pet available for adoption from the Finger Lakes SPCA of Central New York.

This week, we spotlight Rosie.

Q. Who is your best friend?

A. I have asked that cute little hound mix, Justice, to be my BFF. She hasn't responded yet. That's typical. Playing hard to get. I think she will eventually agree, but the waiting is agonizing.

Q. If you could have a job, what would that be?

A. Well, I'm a typical hound and I have a hound nose. I love to go into the play yard, put my nose down and follow any scent I can pick up. So I believe I might look for employment as a tracking dog. I might work for law enforcement, although I'm not sure hounds are their dogs of choice.

Q. What is your favorite treat?

A. One of my shelter people brings chicken for us quite often. I mean, it's really chicken, not fake stuff that you buy in the pet food aisle. She cooks it herself and just for us. I think she loves us.

Q. What has been your best experience?

A. I don't mean to get personal, but I'm going to. The best experience I have ever had was being spayed! I know you think that's silly. I mean, who thinks going under the knife is a good experience? But trust me, my canine and feline girl friends will tell you that being spayed is a lifesaving and safe procedure. Don't wait! Get your girls spayed!

Q. Whom do you prefer, adults or children?

A. Well, I would have to agree with my buddy Cooper about this. I really don't have a preference. I like both as long as they are respectful. But, parents need to teach their children from a young age to not get into a dog's space and face. Doing that can cause a lot of problems.

Q. If you could visit anyplace in the world, where would that be?

A. Uh, I would be looking to visit someplace with somewhat cooler temperatures. I'm thinking maybe Alaska. But wait! I read that temperatures recently reached 90 degrees in Anchorage, Alaska! Is this what is called "global warming?" Maybe I'll just stay here in good old Auburn!

Q. Do you have an interesting fact to share today?

A. I do! Did you know that hounds are classified by the method they use to follow their prey. That correct! There are sight hounds, and they keep their prey in sight while chasing it. Then there are scent hounds, and they track their prey by following its scent. Then there is a group of hounds that use both. Me? Scent hound for sure!

Q. Do you have any advice for the Citizen's readers?

A. I have two pieces of advice for our good Citizen readers. Puh-leeze leave your dogs home when you go out to run errands. Or be prepared to leave your vehicle running with the AC on. I know I sound like a broken record, but this is fact! And please ensure that your pets' rabies vaccinations are up to date. Our Cayuga County Health Department says that the incidence of rabies has increased. Our next free rabies vaccination clinic will be on Aug. 31 — be there! Thank you and love! Rosie and friends.
