Howland School marker unveiled at Union Springs bank

  • Updated

A historical marker was unveiled Tuesday at Generations Bank in Union Springs, commemorating what once stood on the site: The Howland School for the education of young women.

Along with multiple members of the community, Assemblyman Gary Finch and Union Springs Mayor Bud Shattuck were present at the event and delivered remarks.

The sign was unveiled by descendant Patricia Howland White and Generations Bank Senior Vice President of Growth and Profitability A.G. Cutrona.

The marker reads, "Howland School for young women founded on this site in 1863 by George Howland. Became Union Springs Hotel & Sanitarium CA. 1886-1900. William C. Pomeroy Foundation 2018."

Its placement was supported by the Frontenac Historical Society & Museum.
