The Cayuga County Department of Motor Vehicles' eighth annual Organ Donor Month will kick off from 10 a.m. to noon Monday, April 10.
County Clerk Sue Dwyer is partnering with the New York Alliance for Donation to encourage people to become organ/tissue donors.
New York state has the third highest need for donors in the U.S., but one of the lowest rates of donor designation. Only 18 percent of adults have enrolled in the New York State Donate Life registry, compared to 42 percent nationally.
"The statistics are truly eye-opening," Dwyer said in a news release. "Every 18 minutes a person dies waiting for a transplant, and more than 121,000 patients in the United States are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. You can make a difference."
Refreshments and items promoting organ donation will be available at the DMV, 160 Genesee St., Auburn.
