R. Michael Harmon has become the Auburn Fire Department's eighth chief.

April 15, 1994

It was a day of mixed emotions for the Auburn Fire Department yesterday, with one era ending and a new one beginning.

After 34 years in the local ranks, Fire Chief Frank "Chubby" Calarco retired yesterday.

Calarco had held the department's top spot since 1986.

But along with that sadness came the elevation of Assistant Chief R. Michael Harmon, who became the department's eighth chief.

It was mid-January when Calarco, 59, announced his plans to retire around April 15.

Although he has said he's unclear about exactly what he'll do in the future, Calarco is sure those plans will include spending time with his wife of 19 years, the former Deborah Sanders, and the couple's five children: Michael, 17; Christina, 16; Robert, 14; C.J., 9 (his real name is Francis Angelo Calarco II, but Calarco said his wife started calling him C.J. for "Chubby Jr."); and Victoria, 4.
