Protesters display signs in front of the Cayuga County Public Safety Building, charging Cayuga County Jail employees with physical and verbal abuse of inmates.

Feb. 18, 1999

SENNETT — National human rights groups are charging the Cayuga County Jail with physically and verbally abusing inmates.

Representatives from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), the National Action Committee, Workers World and the Mumia Abu-Jamal Defense Committee traveled Wednesday from Rochester for a press conference in front of the Cayuga County Public Safety Building and promised to return with a larger protest in hopes of mustering more media attention to their cause.

They say inmates have complained about abuse, insect-infested food, outdated law books and lack of legal representation in court.
