POPLAR RIDGE — The Union Springs Central boys basketball team had an answer to just about everything Port Byron had to offer Friday night.

After leading at halftime, the Wolves fell victim to the Panthers' talented senior forward Rich Garrigan, who scored 16 of his game-high 29 points in the third quarter, giving Port Byron an eight-point lead.

Union Springs responded in the fourth quarter, switching to a matchup defensive zone that kept Garrigan scoreless and keeping Port Byron within reach.

At the same time, Union Springs picked up its offense. The Wolves overcame a 12-point deficit in the final seven minutes to defeat the Panthers, 59-55, in a hard-fought championship game of the 25th annual Cayuga County Holiday Basketball Tournament at Southern Cayuga Central High School.
