Unity House of Cayuga County has named the recipients of its 2018 Fred Atkins Community Service Award and its Open Arms Award.
The eighth annual Atkins award goes to Katie MacIntyre, of Auburn. Nominated by Jeff Weigand, Jon Wilcox and Vin Gleason, MacIntyre has volunteered for years at community organizations like the Auburn YMCA, Auburn Public Theater, the Play Space and more. She is a new senior marketing analyst for solar at National Grid, and prior to that worked at Generations Bank.
MacIntyre will be awarded $250 for her and another $250 to be given to a Cayuga County nonprofit of her choice. She has chosen the Play Space as her recipient.
The award was established in memory of Atkins, a longtime Cayuga County volunteer and a 30-year board member of Unity House.
"I am honored by this recognition," MacIntyre said in a news release. "To me, serving my community is the only way I know. I have early memories of serving alongside my mother in her annual work supporting the American Cancer Society. I have a strong passion to make my chosen home of Auburn the best place it can be — not just for me and my family but for all. If we all lend a hand a little more often, imagine what we could all do for the communities we love!"
The Open Arms Award goes to Richard Pinckney, owner of Rx City Pharmacy in Auburn. Nominated by Unity House Employment Services Coordinator Freddie Wilson, Pinckney created a paid position for an individual with disabilities at his business and made her part of its team.
"We understand how important it is for these individuals to contribute in our community," Pinckney said in the release. "This type of collaboration is rewarding to both the individual and the employer. Our current Unity House worker has some limitations but we choose to utilize her strengths. She fits right into our team and is an absolute joy. It is a win-win situation."
Both awards will be presented at Unity House's annual dinner at 5:30 p.m. Monday, April 23, at Lakeview Golf Club, 6642 E. Lake Road. RSVPs are due by April 13. Tickets are $50.
