Buerkle holds onto lead after ballots counted in Onondaga County

  • Updated

The counting in Onondaga County is complete and Republican challenger Ann Marie Buerkle is still leading the 25th Congressional District race heading into Wayne County -- a county Buerkle won by over 6,000 votes on election night.

Rep. Dan Maffei, D-DeWitt, received 3,571 votes and Buerkle picked up 3,014 in Onondaga County, according to Buerkle spokeswoman Liza Lowery. Lowery also said Buerkle picked up 144 votes today in Wayne County as they wrap up recanvassing before counting absentees Saturday.

Overall, Buerkle has 103,626 votes to Maffei's 103,215.

"While Maffei gained some votes yesterday when the City of Syracuse absentees were counted, he failed to gain what he needed to overcome Buerkle's lead," Lowery said in a statement. "At some point the numbers just don't work. There is not room for Maffei to gain anymore ground in this race."

Maffei campaign spokeswoman Abigail Gardner issued a statement this afternoon after the numbers were announced.

"As we've always said, the most important thing is that every eligible vote needs to be counted and we are nearing completion of that lengthy process. Wayne County still needs to count their absentee ballots."
