The Auburn Police Department has decided to extend its No Shave November campaign by participating in Don't Shave December next month.
Police Chief Shawn Butler and Deputy Chief Roger Anthony decided to waive the department's facial hair policy for the months of November and December in an effort to raise funds for local families in need. Any officers who wished to participate had to donate $25 per month. Male officers were allowed to grow facial hair while female officers could wear blue streaks in their hair.
So far, Butler said the department has raised over $2,600 from the community. That money will be used to provide a "Christmas experience" for two local families.
Any additional funds raised will go toward the department's annual Shop with a Cop event. On Dec. 16, selected children from the community will team up with officers to buy and wrap Christmas presents for their family and loved ones.
"This event is a continuing effort by our officers to remind children that our police officers are positive and trusted role models in their community," Butler said Wednesday in a press release.
