An Auburn woman was arrested Wednesday night for allegedly taking a car she didn't own from the Walmart parking lot.
The Auburn Police Department received a report of a missing car on Dec. 10. The car was last seen in the Walmart parking lot. The driver left the car in the parking lot after being arrested for petit larceny, the police said.
While police were initially unsure if the car had been stolen or towed away, the car was subsequently spotted in a driveway at 136 Dunning Ave. in Auburn around 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Police then determined that Jamie Smith, 38, of 5 Orchard St. was the person who operated the vehicle.
Smith was charged with one count of second-degree unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, a class E felony, and was held until she was arraigned in Auburn City Court Thursday morning. Police were unsure if she was remanded back to Cayuga County Jail or released.
Police said that unauthorized use of a motor vehicle is typically a misdemeanor charge, but it was a felony because Smith was previously convicted of the same crime in 2014.
