The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is investigating silage runoff discovered on Scipio-Venice Townline Road Thursday.
A complaint of a manure spill from a farm tanker in the vicinity of Van Nostrand Farm was called in around 10:30 a.m. Staff from the DEC and the Cayuga County Soil and Water Conservation District responded to the spill around 12:30 p.m. and found no evidence of a manure spill, according to a spokesperson for the DEC.

While driving on Scipio-Venice Townline Road, staff did discover leachate from bunk silage storage on the Van Nostrand Farm. The liquid, which the DEC believes the complainant mistook for manure, had broken through the farm's Vegetative Treatment Area and was discharging to a neighboring field and into a roadside ditch. The farm was notified of the incident and was asked to take action to prevent the runoff.
The DEC spokesperson said there was no threat to the environment, but it continues to investigate and will take enforcement action if necessary.
