Gallery: Genesee Elementary honors families with first-day photos at home

  • Updated

Genesee Elementary School staff took pictures of students at their homes Thursday for their first day of the fall semester, in which most students started with online instruction under the Auburn Enlarged City School District's phased approach to the school year. The school's mascot, Pride, posed with some families. School librarian Anne Mlod said she has taken pictures of students on the first day for years, but the circumstances are different this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which include making sure the photographers were 10 feet away from the families. "This has been a tradition for the last 19 years, I take a first day of school picture for families outside the building," she said. "I said to myself, 'I'm not going to stop now,' so it just felt good to do it."

Different grades in the district are set to gradually come back to school physically on some days under a hybrid model, with the final transition to hybrid set to happen for students by Oct. 13.
