New York State Thruway toll plazas, like the one at Weedsport Exit 40 in Cayuga County, are deserted since the state switched to a cashless tolling system. Replacing the iconic toll booths are large steel gantries designed to improve efficiency and decrease congestion on the historic 66-year-old highway system connecting New York City to Albany to Buffalo. About 1,100 toll collector jobs were eliminated. The state Thruway Authority is now in the process of removing the old toll booths exit-by-exit, with Weedsport scheduled to be dismantled at the end of May.
