The Schweinfurth Art Center in Auburn is welcoming a new marketing director.

Maria Welych was brought on for the position, according to a press release from the center. She was hired through a $43,000 grant from the Regional Economic Development Council and the New York State Council on the Arts.

"I'm looking forward to promoting the excellent exhibits and programs of the Schweinfurth Art Center," Welych said in the release. "I believe the art center is a jewel in the city of Auburn, and I'm planning to work with other cultural institutions in the community to promote the region."

Donna Lamb, the center's executive director, said Welych was brought in to increase awareness of the center's program and the center itself.

"Our goal is to expand programs and audiences, to increase cultural tourism and to contribute to the community's ongoing downtown revitalization efforts," Lamb said. "This new position will play a key role in achieving that."

Welych had previous served as the marketing director and grant specialist  for the Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science & Technology in Syracuse from May 2013 until February 2018, the release said. The release said Welych had also performed reporting and editing duties for 25 years at The Post-Standard newspaper in Syracuse.
