A winter storm warning has been issued for a large portion of Cayuga County.
The National Weather Service announced Monday that the winter storm warning will be in effect from 3 a.m. Tuesday to 7 a.m. Wednesday for southern Cayuga, Cortland, Chenango and Otsego counties.
Warnings have also been issued for areas that include Seneca, Tompkins, Onondaga and Oswego counties. Northern Cayuga County and Wayne County are under winter weather advisories.
According to the warning for the southern half of Cayuga County, heavy snow and mixed precipitation is expected, according to the alert. Total snow accumulations of six to nine inches, with ice accumulations of up to one-tenth of an inch, are in the forecast.
Snow will develop around sunrise and become heavy between 8 and 10 a.m. Snow will mix with sleet and freezing by early afternoon and continue overnight into Wednesday.
The storm could create difficult travel conditions. Wind gusts as high as 30 mph are possible.
