In the article "Schumer: More federal funds needed to combat blue-green algae in state streams and lakes" it states how New York State Senator Schumer is so actively working to ensure the availability of clean, healthy drinking water for New Yorkers. It should be a point of pride an honor that the elected officials of this state care so deeply about the lives of their constituents.
To have contamination like toxic blue-green algae in the waters of New York is completely unacceptable, especially in a day and age where the extreme dangers of unclean drinking water are widely known. To have 126 breakouts in 10 months is even more concerning.
Luckily, as of late August, the EPA institutes the Clean Water Rule that aims to more closely and effectively regulate the pollution of waterways across the United States, tightening loopholes left in the Clean Water Act. It will protect drinking water for over 11 million New Yorkers and make sure the beautiful and iconic waterways of this state and country are here to stay. This rule is already seeing backlash in Congress as big business and their lobbyist fight the implementation of this new rule. To see responsible Senators like Senator Schumer fighting for the people who believe in him and voted for him to represent them is heartening and hopefully will serve as a brave example to other officials who are on the verge of being swayed. The citizens of New York and America should not have to worry incessantly about such a basic necessity as clean drinking water.
