MORAVIA — Audrey Jean Hargett Sharpsteen, 63, of East Cayuga Street, Moravia, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, April 9, 2019.
Born in Auburn on Jan. 30, 1956, she was the daughter of the late Allan and Marilyn Ryan Hargett. She was a graduate of Moravia High School class of 1974 and was employed for 32 years at Auburn Community Hospital.
Audrey was a lifelong community member of Moravia. She was an active volunteer for more than 20 years with Four Town Ambulance where she served as Captain and Car 1 for 10 years. During those years she was awarded several recognitions for outstanding achievements, including the W.E. Killbourne Life Saving award in 1979, 89 and 90. A proclamation by the town of Moravia was created for Audrey Jean Sharpsteen Day dated Dec. 6, 2002, in recognition of her service to her community. She put many hours into Four Town and was one of the last volunteer medics to respond 24/7. Audrey was a great asset to the organization, following her parents’ legacy as Charter Members. Her legacy will live on forever in our hearts and never be forgotten. When she was not volunteering, Audrey was working at Auburn Community Hospital. To her it was not merely a job; the time spent was an extension of her passion to care for others in need. She loved her job, and her life as a volunteer. She was a wonderful mother to her family, volunteer squad, and her night shift ED.
“To know her was to love her.” Samuel Rogers
Audrey will be deeply missed; she had a heart of gold and was loved by all who knew her.
She is survived by her children, Nicole (Michael) Jones, Michael (Clarice) Burgman, Thomas (April) Burgman, and Ronica (Josh) Weeks; her siblings, Danny (Terri) Hargett, Shelia (Al) Kemp, Lorrie (Brian) Hilliard, Steven (Lorry) Hargett, and Melissa Brown; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Audrey was predeceased by her brother-in-law, Eric Brown.
A celebration of life will be held from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 14, at the Moravia Fire Department, 38 Keeler Ave., Moravia.
