Jean S. Roberts

AUBURN — Jean S. Roberts, RN, of 7 Throop Ave., Auburn, passed away on June 15, 2019, at The Commons on St. Anthony.

She was born in Syracuse to Carl and Edwina (Bantle) Schenkenberger in 1934. Jean graduated from Nottingham High School in Syracuse and earned her RN at Cayuga Community College. She loved nursing and caring for others with equal parts, heart and grit. She was so determined to become a nurse that before earning her RN, she worked nights, studied for her LPN license by day, and kept her family fed and in clean clothes. Later, she worked at Auburn Community Hospital, Cayuga County Nursing Home, and at the end of her career at BOCES, teaching both nursing and life skills to those studying to become nurse’s aides. With her husband, David, for many years she operated a square dance fashion store, a business that allowed her to travel the Northeast making friends through square dancing.

Her surviving family members include David, her husband of 64 years; her children, John (Laurelyn) Roberts, Karen (Alan) Betz, and Ellen (Michael) Ferro; the grandchildren she loved to spoil are Margot (Chris) Stotler, Michael D. Ferro, Vincent Ferro, Samuel Ferro, and Katherine Betz.

She was predeceased by her brother, Carl, and is survived by her sister, Barbara Kinney.

Jean was a communicant of St. Peter and John Episcopal Church. The family wishes to send special thanks to the third floor staff at The Commons for their love and heartfelt care.
