FLEMING — Joseph Hannig Jr., 86, of Fleming, passed away peacefully on Jan. 8, 2018 with his family by his side. Joseph was born on Dec. 8, 1931 to Josef and Hedwig Hannig, who were descendants of Germany. He married the love of his life, Rhonwynn Ann Moore, on Saturday, July 28, 1956.
Joseph graduated from Auburn East High School in June 1950. He entered into the U.S. Navy in March 1951 and was honorably discharged March 18, 1955. While serving our country he received the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Upon his return to civilian life, he was employed at Columbian Rope, Bell Telephone/Verizon and GTE Sylvania. During his employment, he continued his education in the accounting and computer science fields, earning his degree from Syracuse University.
Together with his wife, Joseph served the Auburn community in many ways including youth clubs and Boy Scouts of America where he led many of his scouts to receive Eagle Scout status, an accomplishment he was extremely proud of. One of Joseph's greatest joys was performing for audiences in and around Cayuga County as a band member with the Cayugans and the Auburn Civic Band. He was an avid music enthusiast playing his clarinet whenever and wherever he could. He enjoyed the outdoors, camping, music, musicals and most of all spending time with his family.
Joseph is survived by his daughter, Traci Kowal (Keith); his grandchildren, Matthew Kidd, Michael Mahoney, Kaylee, Mitchell, Christian Hannig and Sara Wild (Richard); his great-grandchildren, Adriana, Evan and Ashton; and his sister, Betty Martellaro. He was predeceased by his wife fondly known as Ann; his sons, Michael and Christian; and his siblings, Walter, Helmet, William, Eric, Gary, Rose and Helen.
Per Joseph's wishes, there will be no calling hours. A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13 in The Episcopal Church of SS. Peter and John, 169 Genesee St., Auburn. Burial will be in Soule Cemetery.
