EAST NORTHPORT, N.Y. — Ruth Blake Hill died on Jan. 31, 2017, a few days after her 93rd birthday, at a hospice in East Northport, N.Y., succumbing to Alzheimer’s disease.

Ruth was a native of Port Byron, the daughter of one of the village’s first families. Her grandfather, William Blake, established Blake’s Pharmacy in 1887. At his death in 1926, Ruth’s father, Earl W. Blake operated the store until his death in 1957, when her brother, Robert E. Blake, took over and ran the business until 1989.

After graduating from Port Byron High School, Ruth attended Albany State Teachers College where she earned bachelor's and master’s degrees, later earning another master’s degree at Stony Brook University. She taught high school English at several schools: North Syracuse, Averill Park, Mineola, and Huntington. In 1949, she moved to Long Island where her husband worked as an engineer at Grumman Aircraft Company and later Brookhaven National Laboratory.

An avid reader from childhood, she and her husband led Great Books discussion groups in Hicksville and Huntington and on a radio program, “Great Books on the Air,” broadcast by WBAB in Babylon, Long Island. The couple traveled widely in Europe and to Japan. Ruth was also an accomplished pianist, often accompanying school programs when her children were in elementary school.

Ruth is survived by her husband, Dr. Douglas Hill, of Huntington, N.Y.; three children, Jeffrey D. Hill, of Huntington, Gordon S. Hill, of Perry, Ga., and Heather Hill Worthington, of Southold, N.Y., and four grandchildren, Gwen Hill, Kathleen Hill Littlefield, Blake Elizabeth Worthington, and Breton Skye Worthington.

Her cremated ashes are to be buried in Blake family plot in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Port Byron, on April 29, 2017. Information on the arrangements can be obtained from her husband at 631-421-5544.
