Syracuse Notre Dame Basketball

Syracuse's Paschal Chukwu, left, and Tyus Battle compete for a loose ball with Notre Dame's Dane Goodwin Saturday in South Bend, Ind.

HIT: To Kristin Garland, who is making history as the person appointed to become the next Auburn City Court associate judge.

Garland will be the first woman to hold a judgeship in the city's history. The local attorney is filling the vacancy left when Auburn City Court Judge David Thurston moved to the full-time, elected office after winning the seat last November.

MISS: To the reminder that we've still got plenty of winter to go.

It's been a few weeks since we've seen sustained snow cover in and around Cayuga County, and we've had a few days along the way in which temperatures have been almost spring-like.

But a blast of single-digit temperatures overnight Sunday, followed by an afternoon and evening with strong winds, sleet, freezing rain and snow returned us all to the reality that we've got much more winter weather to endure in 2019.

And truth be told, that's not a bad thing. There's quite a few businesses that rely on winter weather, and residents who enjoy getting out for winter recreational activities.

HIT: To the strong start for the Syracuse University men's and women's basketball programs in Atlantic Coast Conference play.

Both squads earned hard-fought victories over the weekend, with the men winning at Notre Dame while the women prevailed at Virginia Tech.

Both teams now have nice winning streaks going, and Orange fans can feel good about the prospects for some post-season fun.
