Falcon Sportsmen Club Kids Fish Derby

A family patiently waits for a catch at the Falcon Sportsmen Club Kids Fish Derby Sunday.

HIT: To the Falcon Sportsmen Club, for hosting another successful fishing derby for area children.

Sunday's event marked the 67th Falcon Sportsmen Club Kids Fish Derby, and the day couldn't have been more beautiful. Under sunny skies, hundreds took part trying to lure fish from the club pond.

This yearly activity provides terrific family fun, and helps kids to develop an appreciation of the outdoors. Thanks to the organizers and volunteers who have been making it happen for nearly seven decades.

MISS: To the continued challenges for Lake Ontario shoreline communities as a result of the record-high water levels this spring.

Expected strong winds on Tuesday prompted the latest of several lakeshore flood warnings to be issued for an area along Lake Ontario that includes northern Cayuga County.

An extremely wet spring just won't seem to let up, and when winds begin to whip up big waves, potential for damaging floods increases.

Despite the challenges, leaders and merchants in Fair Haven have been working hard to keep the village running, and they are urging people to visit the village and support the businesses.

HIT: To Jordan-Elbridge High School senior Marion Quigley, who captured third place in the pentathlon at the state track and field championship last week.

Quigley competed in the multi-skill event Friday and Saturday at the meet in Middletown. His second-day performance helped him jump three spots, to finish third among small-school competitors and fourth overall.

Quigley entered the state meet having posted a first-place finish and school record at the Section III state qualifier meet at Cicero-North Syracuse May 31.
