The Auburn school district is asking us to spend $43.7 million on upgrades. This will raise the tax levy by 1.9 percent, with that extra amount being paid every year until 2025, so there goes our taxes again.

I just want to remind everyone for at least the last two years, the school district has been in the red at least $3 million. So when you go to vote just remember that the tax levy will be starting at a 1.9-percent increase. This will not include the money they will need to make up for the shortfall I can almost guarantee will happen this next school budget plus the additional money they will need to run the school district. There is no sense in believing Albany will be giving us any more foundation aid than they have been since they only focus on New York City.

I can see the need for security in the schools but the amount they are asking for seems too high for what they want to do. It seems like they want to turn schools into prisons. Another thing the school district should look at is maybe combining the five elementary schools since enrollment has been dropping over the years. One school has approximately 385 students enrolled for the grades of K-6. The drop in enrollment is the reason West Middle School was closed.
