As county clerk I have had oversight of the DMV office for the past 15 years. I am opposed to the legislation in Albany that would allow illegal individuals to get a New York State Driver’s License.
If the governor signs this into law, DMV staff would be required to accept foreign documents from illegal individuals and not be allowed to question any documentation. Staff would be required to issue them a NYS Driver’s Permit, and then witness as the non-citizens have the option (and the ability) to illegally register to vote in New York state elections. Yet, every day, due to strict New York State DMV Laws, staff is required to turn away U. S. Citizens who don’t have enough documentation to complete their transactions!
One of the major flaws is that a person who presents a foreign document as identification is given the option to answer the question: Are You a U.S. citizen? If they answer yes, then on an electronic screen they can answer the question: Would you like to register to vote? If they answer yes, they can, on the spot, right there, with my staff watching them, register to vote! That registration is sent electronically to the Board of Elections and the Board of Elections will have no way of knowing if they are, or are not U. S. citizens.
This flaw could easily be fixed. If the applicant does not have the proper documents, then they should not have the option to answer those questions. Although this concern has been brought to the attention of Albany lawmakers many times, they have not made one move to fix the problem. Their silence and refusal to change this process speaks volumes about their motive to push this legislation through.
Let me ask you: do you know of any other country in the world that would allow non-citizens the right to vote in their elections? Can you vote in other countries? The answer is no!
Don't wait until this becomes law! Cut this out and write these words across the letter:
I AM OPPOSED TO GIVING UNDOCUMENTED PEOPLE THE RIGHT TO GET A NYS DRIVER LICENSE AND ALLOWING THEM AN OPTION TO REGISTER TO VOTE! (Bills S01747 & A03675)
Put it in an envelope and mail it to:
