Dr. Dale Buchberger's July 4 column was especially prescient. The Republican majority is feverishly working to deprive millions of Americans of health insurance to reduce the debit ceiling and provide tax relief to wealthy individuals etc. New York state has many of those millions of citizens.
I can't understand the reasoning behind wanting to balance a budget vs. keeping citizens healthy. How could any citizen withhold or deny health care to those citizens in need and unable to help themselves?
Ask any New York state representative or senator if he/she would risk the soundness of his own budget in order to help and even save a member of his own family having a medical crisis or emergency. Would the New York state congressman or woman say “Well if I pay for their health expenses then my household budget will be in trouble, so no I won't risk it." I'll bet they would spend every dime and more to help family members.
Men and women fought and died for this country in the belief that their families would be cared for while they were gone or if they did not come home. That America was the kind of country that looked out for all of its citizens, providing safe and clean water, education for all, police and fire protection, inspected food, safety regulations and the list goes on.
Looking out for citizens' health care should be right at the head of the list. Our current state Legislature or governor does not seem to be able to or won’t connect the dots. Let's pass S. 4840 for all New Yorkers.
