A pair of local wrestlers competed at the Middle Atlantic Wrestling Association Eastern wrestling championships over the weekend of May 4 and May 5, with one coming away with an Eastern national title.
Cael Powers and Mason Tanner, members of the Ruthless Aggression wrestling program, traveled to Salisbury, Maryland, both had strong showings at the event.
Powers, a two-time New York state champion, won the the Bantam division 73-pound title. He had won first place at both qualifying events.
Tanner competed in the Midget division at 62 pounds and placed fifth to secure All-American status. He finished 4-2 over the two-day event. Prior to the event, Tanner took first place at the district qualifier and third place at the Northern Regionals.
All wrestlers that finish in the top eight of their age and weight class are recognized as MAWA All-Americans. Powers and Tanner both qualified for the MAWA Eastern National meet by placing within the top four at the MAWA Northern Region Championships at Kings College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania in April.
Both Powers and Tanner attend Port Byron schools and are also members of the Port Byron youth wrestling team.
